Marcia Barbakoff, Berta Rubin & Debbie Usadi were my friends from "the block". Once I graduated from JHS 59 I lost regular touch with many of my Laurelton friends as I attended Aviation High. I graduated PS 156, JHS 59 and Andrew Jackson in 1965.
My friends all say "I don't look or act like a grandmother! I have very fond memories of Laurelton - a uniquely wonderful small town where close friendships were made. We moved out in 1973 when my parents moved to Phoenix, AZ and I moved to Bellerose after getting married. ), Gary Golden, Phil Radin, Peterson Twins, Paul Sklar my dearest and best friend (sadly taken at the age of about 30). I lived in Cambria Heights, a few blocks from AJHS. My parents used to drive me to Laurelton to meet my friends at Lil & Eds. My younger brother Mark lives in Smithtown with his wife and 2 kids, 16 and 21. Website: lived at 137-39 231 Street from 1956-78 with my sister Pamela and brother Roger. We belonged to Temple Beth El and the Sunday night youth group became my local social network: Jeff Weiss, Barry Lucas, Elliott Levine, the Linzer brothers, Louie Abramowitz (my very first date! I often think of Laurelton, my friends, the neighborhood, school and fabulous food. Queens College (1968), University of Virginia Law School (1971). I would love to hear from my old friends and neighbors from 229th street. Went back to Far Rockaway for a couple of years and then back to FL. So much of our lives were molded in Laurelton and Jackson. Mike Kammerman, Mike Ashkin, Bruce Waxman, Howie Levine, and the whole bunch of terrific guys and gals. Between us, we have 5 kids and 6-and-a-half grandchildren. I look forward to now keeping up through this site. Most of my family (Judy Gursky, Robert Gursky) are still in New York but they love to visit us here and so I don't get up there much. I remember bringing "milk money" and "bank money" and having to freeze for 1 minute when the bell rang outside, before lining up.
Some of the people I remember are Sue Buller, Alice Schaefer, Joyce Hazan, Carol Forman, Abby Wendroff, Rita Coffield, Stan Shaw, Barbara Boklan, Jerry Leinwol, Diane Bayer, Cookie Linett, Howie Engel, Manny Steurman and Marcia Kleigman. Grew up playing softball, basketball and stickball on the asphalt at PS156. Played with some really good athletes like Alan Shapiro, Hal Greenhouse, George Kay, Sandy Rice, Marty Blank, Billy Cohen, etc., etc., etc. You may not remember me but you may remember visiting my house to smoke a cigarette before services or school. I lived at 135-18 230th Street with my sister, Roslyn Blocher Rubenstein. My brother-in-law, Ira Rubenstein graduated from Far Rockaway ('58). The best years were growing up in Rosedale/Laurelton. I remember going to Brookfield Park, The Pizza King, the dances at Rosedale Jewish Center, the holidays walking to Laurelton Jewish Center. I'd love to hear from those of you who remember me. Taught at Riverhead HS with Alan Weinstock right out of college. My son is a third year medical student and my daughter is a freshman at Hamilton College. Although I was only 9 when we moved, Laurelton was always the best. Lived next to Arthur Mack, Howie Miller, Harvey Blumenfeld, Gary Weinstein, Joel Levine & Beatrice Brown. I have so many wonderful memories of growing up in Laurelton. Now we are old enough to appreciate what that sense of close community means, and how much it shaped who we all are today. Lived at 131-64 229th Street with my sister Ellen  & Debby [SGHS 1970]. She was a sweet kid and suffered a great loss when her Dad, Nick, died of a heart attack in the summer of '62 or '63. After graduating in 1960, I attended the University of Michigan and graduated from NYU uptown in 1963. I would love to hear from friends from those times. I lived in Laurelton all my life until I married by husband Mel in 1971. I'm learning to play bridge and I'm doing line dancing! I am now inspired to dig out my scrapbooks and photo albums. I'm retired living in NC now and the Laurelton site brings back so many wonderful memories. Have three fantastic children and have been married for 30 years. Born in Rosedale 1942, moved to Francis Lewis Blvd.& 131st Ave at 2 years of age and then to 227th street and 137th Ave as a young teen. Roz ('59) and I ('64) graduated from Andrew Jackson. What a delight to find this website and to spend time reliving the memories everyone has contributed. I'm beginning to sound like the victim of an Army experiment. I grew up in Cambria Heights were my late Dad, Norman Cohen, MD, had his office in our house. Then off to Hobart College, Harvard Medical School, Univ of PA and Northwestern for residency and fellowship. Moved to Spokane, WA in 1980 where I have practiced gastroenterology and my wife endocrinolgy. I remember all the teachers being mentioned by others (Herb Magidson, director of The Man Who Came to Dinner, which I stage managed really inspired me to do the theater thing as I'm currently a local stage director and actor and have worked on almost 100 shows in the last 20 years). I remember playing stickball in the streets, stealing pretzels from Schultz's candy store, buying a stickball bat for 29 cents and many other very fond memories of growing up in a great/fun neighborhood. Nice to revisit some of the old places and names from the past. The memorties are good and after 30 years traveling around the world, PS 156 was a great place to get started.
